Overview

We are partnering with a well-established, nationally recognized organization to hire a Structural Engineer for its growing in-house Property Development team in the Twin Cities. This is a unique opportunity to move into an owner-side engineering environment, working directly with an integrated team of architects, engineers, construction professionals, and real estate development leaders. Rather than working across multiple outside clients in a traditional consulting environment, you'll help evaluate, design, and deliver projects across a national portfolio of commercial properties.

The position offers an appealing combination of structural design, existing-building evaluations, adaptive reuse, construction involvement, and direct mentorship from a highly experienced structural engineering professional. We're looking for someone with a strong technical foundation who enjoys solving practical engineering challenges and wants to broaden their exposure to the entire real estate development process.

The Opportunity

One of the most interesting aspects of this position is the opportunity to evaluate existing buildings for renovation, conversion, and new uses. You'll help determine whether existing structural systems can support proposed building modifications, changes in occupancy, or new design requirements. When modifications are necessary, you'll develop practical engineering solutions involving structural reinforcement, strengthening, and other improvements. You'll also support new construction projects, working on foundations, steel structures, specialty building features, and related structural systems. This is an opportunity to see how structural engineering decisions influence everything from initial property evaluation and project feasibility to construction execution and long-term building performance.

What You'll Be Doing

Structural Engineering & Design

  • Perform structural calculations, load analyses, and modeling for commercial building projects
  • Design and evaluate structural systems involving steel, concrete, wood, and related materials
  • Develop structural drawings, specifications, and construction documents
  • Support foundation design, steel detailing, and specialty structural elements
  • Utilize structural analysis software and BIM/CAD tools to develop engineering solutions
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes and structural design standards

Existing Buildings & Adaptive Reuse

  • Evaluate existing commercial buildings for potential renovation, conversion, or redevelopment
  • Assess existing framing, foundations, structural capacity, and building conditions
  • Determine whether existing structures can accommodate proposed changes in occupancy, loading, or building use
  • Develop structural modifications, reinforcement, and strengthening solutions
  • Collaborate with construction and development teams to evaluate feasibility, scope, and cost
  • Conduct field investigations and review existing construction documents and conditions

Construction & Project Support

  • Participate in site visits and field inspections to evaluate structural conditions and construction progress
  • Review shop drawings, contractor submittals, and RFIs
  • Support resolution of structural challenges encountered during construction
  • Coordinate with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and Project Managers
  • Help ensure engineering solutions balance structural performance, constructability, project budgets, and schedules

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work directly with internal Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Real Estate, and Operations teams
  • Participate in project discussions from early feasibility through construction completion
  • Collaborate with experienced structural engineering leadership on complex technical challenges
  • Contribute to engineering standards and continuous improvement across a national portfolio
  • Support projects involving a variety of commercial building types and construction conditions

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a Structural Engineer who has developed a strong technical foundation and is interested in taking the next step in their career.

The ideal candidate has approximately 3–6 years of structural engineering experience, preferably within a consulting or commercial building design environment.

Experience with existing-building evaluations, renovations, structural modifications, or adaptive reuse projects will be especially valuable.

We want someone who enjoys getting into the details of how buildings are constructed, understanding existing conditions, and developing creative solutions when the original structure doesn't align with a project's future use.

Equally important is the ability to communicate effectively, collaborate across disciplines, and approach engineering challenges with curiosity and initiative.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Approximately 3–6 years of professional structural engineering experience
  • Strong foundation in structural design, analysis, and engineering calculations
  • Experience working with steel, concrete, and/or wood structural systems
  • Understanding of applicable building codes, structural standards, and construction practices
  • Experience using Revit, AutoCAD, or comparable CAD/BIM tools
  • Experience with structural analysis and modeling software
  • Ability to collaborate with Architecture, Engineering, and Construction teams
  • Willingness to perform field investigations and visit active construction sites
  • Ability to travel approximately monthly for project-related activities
  • Ability to work onsite in Chanhassen, Minnesota

Preferred

  • Existing-building assessment and adaptive reuse experience
  • Structural engineering for commercial renovations or building conversions
  • Experience evaluating structural capacity for changes in use or occupancy
  • Structural strengthening, reinforcement, or retrofit experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
  • Experience with commercial, retail, hospitality, healthcare, recreation, or mixed-use facilities
  • Experience with ETABS, SAP2000, RISA, or similar structural analysis software
  • Familiarity with IBC, AISC, ACI, and ASCE 7 standards
  • Experience with large-scale commercial development or repeatable building prototypes

Compensation & Benefits

The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with a discretionary company match
  • Paid time off and applicable paid sick leave
  • Life insurance and disability coverage
  • Flexible spending and dependent care accounts
  • Parental leave and adoption assistance
  • Training and professional development opportunities
  • Access to company facilities, services, and employee discounts
