We are partnering with a highly respected, employee-owned engineering consulting firm to hire a Senior Mechanical Engineer for its Commercial Buildings practice in downtown Minneapolis.

With more than 60 years in business, the firm provides comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, commissioning, and energy engineering services across commercial, healthcare, education, mission-critical, retail, and science & technology markets.

This is a senior technical opportunity for an experienced Professional Engineer (PE) who wants to remain closely involved in engineering and design while taking greater ownership over projects, clients, and the development of younger engineers.

You'll lead the mechanical design of sophisticated commercial building projects, collaborate directly with architects and clients, and serve as a technical resource within an established engineering team.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll lead the design and coordination of HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial building projects from early design through construction.

This is more than a production-design position. You'll have the opportunity to influence project strategy, solve complex mechanical challenges, coordinate across disciplines, interact directly with clients and project partners, and mentor developing engineers.

What You'll Be Doing

Mechanical Design & Engineering

  • Lead the design of HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial building projects
  • Develop mechanical system concepts and evaluate design alternatives
  • Perform engineering calculations and equipment selection
  • Apply applicable mechanical codes, energy standards, and engineering best practices
  • Review drawings, specifications, calculations, and other technical deliverables
  • Help ensure mechanical systems are efficient, constructible, reliable, and aligned with client requirements

Project Leadership

  • Provide mechanical engineering leadership throughout the project lifecycle
  • Coordinate project scope, schedule, design requirements, and technical deliverables
  • Identify and resolve design and coordination challenges
  • Support projects through design, documentation, bidding, and construction
  • Maintain high standards for technical quality and project execution

Client & Team Collaboration

  • Work directly with architects, owners, contractors, and other project stakeholders
  • Coordinate closely with electrical engineers and other disciplines
  • Participate in client meetings and technical presentations
  • Build trusted relationships with clients and project partners
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both engineering and non-engineering audiences

Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Serve as a technical resource for other mechanical engineers and designers
  • Review work and provide engineering guidance to junior team members
  • Participate in the development and mentorship of emerging engineers
  • Help maintain and advance the team's engineering standards and best practices

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced mechanical engineer who combines strong building-systems design expertise with the ability to lead projects, communicate with clients, and mentor other engineers.

The ideal candidate has spent their career designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial buildings and is ready for a senior role where their technical judgment and experience will have meaningful influence.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Approximately 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Significant experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial buildings
  • Strong understanding of mechanical codes, energy standards, and building-system design practices
  • Experience leading projects and coordinating multidisciplinary design efforts
  • Ability to interact effectively with architects, contractors, owners, and other project stakeholders
  • Strong technical, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred

  • Experience with Revit and modern building-design software
  • Consulting engineering / MEP firm experience
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and designers
  • Experience leading complex commercial building projects from design through construction

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $120,000–$165,000
  • Annual performance bonus
  • Additional incentive compensation targeted around 4% of annual salary

Location & Work Environment

This position is based in downtown Minneapolis and follows a hybrid schedule with approximately three days per week in the office.

Wednesday is the primary team office day, with flexibility around the other onsite days based on project needs and employee schedules.

Employees commuting downtown receive a $150 monthly parking stipend or paid public-transit option.
