Overview

We are partnering with an established, global technology and hardware manufacturer to hire a Senior Manager of Software & Electronics Engineering to lead the next phase of its connected-product development.

The organization has a longstanding presence in the retail technology and point-of-sale (POS) hardware market, serving customers and technology partners around the world. As its product portfolio evolves, the company is investing in connected technologies that bring together electronics, embedded software, cloud platforms, APIs, and digital applications. This position will play a central role in that evolution.

We're looking for a technically strong, entrepreneurial engineering leader who can bridge the gap between hardware and software, establish the technical direction for connected products, and help build the engineering capabilities needed to support future growth. This is a true player-coach opportunity, with approximately 50% of the role focused on hands-on technical leadership and 50% on team development, project execution, and management of internal and external engineering resources.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants meaningful technical ownership without stepping away from the engineering work they enjoy. You'll lead a small, multidisciplinary engineering function responsible for software and electronics technologies across the company's product portfolio. The organization already has strong electronics expertise, but is looking to strengthen its software leadership as its products become increasingly connected and digitally enabled.

You'll help establish technology architecture, improve software development practices, guide product innovation, and ensure seamless integration between physical hardware, embedded systems, applications, and cloud infrastructure. The role offers direct visibility to senior engineering and product leadership, collaboration with global teams, and the opportunity to influence both near-term product development and the company's longer-term technology strategy.

What You'll Be Doing

Software, Electronics & Technology Leadership

  • Lead technical development across embedded software, electronics, cloud applications, APIs, SDKs, and connected-product technologies
  • Establish technology architecture and engineering standards for current and future products
  • Provide hands-on technical direction and support complex engineering decisions
  • Bridge hardware and software development to ensure reliable, integrated product performance
  • Evaluate new technologies, development tools, and architectural approaches
  • Establish scalable software development, code management, testing, and release practices
  • Help guide practical adoption of AI-assisted development tools and emerging technologies

Connected Product Development

  • Oversee the design, development, validation, and commercialization of software-enabled hardware products
  • Support connectivity and communication between devices, applications, and cloud platforms
  • Partner with Product Management to translate customer requirements into technical solutions
  • Guide development of embedded systems, firmware, software applications, and integration interfaces
  • Ensure technology solutions meet performance, reliability, security, and quality expectations
  • Support existing products through enhancements, troubleshooting, and lifecycle improvements

Engineering Team & Partner Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a small team of engineering professionals
  • Establish technical priorities, project expectations, and development standards
  • Manage external software and engineering development partners
  • Coordinate technical work across globally distributed teams
  • Help evaluate future staffing needs and build internal engineering capabilities
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product Management, Hardware Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Service
  • Collaborate with international colleagues and product leaders across multiple time zones
  • Support engineering decisions involving cost, manufacturability, reliability, and customer experience
  • Manage technical project timelines, resources, and development priorities
  • Provide clear communication and recommendations to senior leadership

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an engineering leader who understands both the physical and digital sides of connected products.

The ideal candidate has developed or led technology involving embedded devices, electronics, firmware, cloud platforms, and/or software integrations.

You don't need to be an expert in every technology. However, you should bring meaningful technical depth in several areas and understand how the pieces work together to create a reliable, commercially successful product.

This role is particularly attractive for someone who has worked in a smaller or midsized product-development environment, where engineers take ownership, solve problems directly, and work across traditional functional boundaries.

We're open to an established Engineering Manager or a strong Technical Lead / Software Architect who has demonstrated leadership ability and is ready to assume broader responsibility.

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong professional experience in software engineering, embedded systems, electronics engineering, or connected-product development
  • Approximately 3+ years of technical or engineering leadership experience, including team leadership, technical leadership, or supervisory responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to connect software development with electronics and hardware-based products
  • Technical credibility in multiple areas such as embedded software, firmware, electronics, cloud platforms, APIs, SDKs, or systems integration
  • Experience supporting complex product development from concept through commercialization
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle practices, technology architecture, and engineering quality
  • Ability to lead technical decisions while remaining actively involved in engineering work
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with internal engineering teams, external partners, and global stakeholders

A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred. Candidates with equivalent technical expertise and relevant experience will also be considered.

Preferred

  • Experience developing Internet of Things (IoT) or connected hardware products
  • Embedded firmware and electronics development experience
  • Experience with Android, Windows, and/or Linux environments
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, TLS, USB HID, and related connectivity technologies
  • Experience developing or integrating APIs and SDKs
  • Cloud application architecture and hosting platform experience
  • Familiarity with Heroku or similar hosting environments
  • Cybersecurity, software quality, and regulatory compliance experience
  • Experience managing outsourced software development partners
  • Point-of-sale (POS), payment technology, retail technology, or related hardware experience
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools and establishing effective code management practices

Location & Work Environment

This position is based in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area, with a hybrid schedule of three days onsite and two days remote.

The role involves close collaboration with local engineering and product teams, as well as international colleagues and external technology partners.

We're looking for a motivated, technically credible leader who enjoys building products, solving complex engineering challenges, and helping an established organization take its connected technology capabilities to the next level.
