Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer

Overview

A well-established environmental and engineering consulting firm in the Twin Cities is seeking a Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer to join its growing industrial services team.

This firm has supported industrial, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure clients for more than three decades and provides a wide range of services including environmental consulting, process engineering, compliance, permitting, and field services. The organization works closely with clients in sectors such as industrial manufacturing, renewable fuels, process technology, and infrastructure.

This role will focus heavily on OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), compliance, and process engineering support for industrial and manufacturing clients. The position offers the opportunity to work on complex engineering challenges, collaborate with experienced consultants, and support projects across multiple industries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) for industrial and manufacturing clients
  • Conduct Process Safety Management (PSM) audits and assist clients in developing and implementing PSM programs
  • Support engineering feasibility studies and process design initiatives
  • Assist with environmental permitting and regulatory compliance related to air, water, and hazardous materials
  • Provide engineering support for brownfield and greenfield industrial projects
  • Develop technical reports, engineering calculations, and compliance documentation
  • Assist with process improvement initiatives, safety programs, and operational procedures
  • Support project management activities including budgeting, proposal preparation, and client coordination
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, environmental scientists, and regulatory specialists
  • Participate in client meetings, site visits, and technical reviews
  • Travel to client facilities as needed (approximately 25%)

Desired Technical Experience

  • OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) programs
  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) facilitation

  • Engineering feasibility studies and process design
  • Environmental permitting and regulatory compliance
  • Water / wastewater systems analysis or treatment
  • Environmental remediation methods and technologies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, ideally within industrial, manufacturing, energy, or consulting environments
  • 2+ years of experience working in a plant or production environment preferred
  • Familiarity with PSM, PHA, air/water permitting, and environmental compliance requirements
  • Strong technical writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience preparing technical reports, proposals, or regulatory documentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain licensure

Work Environment

This position includes a combination of office-based consulting work and field site visits. Project assignments may include work at industrial facilities, construction sites, and locations requiring environmental remediation or hazardous material cleanup. Safety training and required certifications will be provided.

Applicants must be comfortable working in industrial environments and conducting field inspections when necessary.

Schedule & Travel

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Typical hours: Monday–Friday during standard business hours
  • Occasional evening or weekend work depending on project needs
  • Up to 25% travel for client visits, project meetings, and site inspections
