Manager – Health & Safety

Position Summary

The Manager – Health & Safety will be responsible for ensuring the safety and health of employees across mining and plant operations. This role will oversee and enforce all health and safety protocols, develop and maintain safety programs, conduct inspections, ensure compliance with regulations (including MSHA), and foster a strong culture of safety throughout operations.

The Manager will work closely with Safety Coordinators, employees, and contractors to identify hazards, implement preventive measures, and address safety concerns effectively. This position reports directly to the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and monitor the mine’s health and safety management system.

Ensure compliance with MSHA regulations and other applicable standards.

Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of mining sites, processing plants, and related facilities.

Lead investigations into incidents, accidents, and near-misses; prepare reports and recommend corrective actions.

Stay current with industry standards, best practices, and regulatory changes, integrating them into training and safety protocols.

Lead safety drills, emergency response exercises, and safety meetings.

Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, investigations, and follow-up actions.

Liaise with government agencies and regulatory bodies during inspections and audits.

Report safety performance, incidents, and compliance status to senior management and regulatory authorities.

Monitor safety performance metrics and prepare regular reports for leadership.

Coordinate and oversee emergency response plans and drills.

Assist in preparing for and managing external safety audits and inspections.

Promote open communication regarding safety concerns and encourage proactive reporting of unsafe conditions.

Skills & Qualifications

Minimum 10 years of safety management experience, preferably in the mining industry.

In-depth knowledge of MSHA regulations, safety standards, and best practices for mining and industrial environments.

Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all levels.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management software.

Relevant safety certifications (e.g., MSHA, CSP, CIH) strongly preferred.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field required.

Advanced degree or additional certifications (CSP, MSHA Instructor, etc.) a plus.
